The Religious Left

It's a cult. The only difference between the religions right and the religious left, is that the religious right worships a man, and the religious left worships a woman. And no, I'm not talking about Hillary Clinton. In the Religion of the left, the God of Global Warming is Mother Nature, the Earth is Heaven, and mankind is the Devil and should be cast out from paradise.

Many of the people who began sounding the global warming alarm, are the same environmental do-gooder flower children, that were foretelling the end of the world in the 1960's and 70's. First, it was the coming of the new ice age. Europe was to be frozen by the year 2000 they exclaimed. Crops would die as much of Europe, Asia and North America are consumed by the ice. Then it was the depletion of the ozone layer. And does anyone remember acid rain? As if living under the threat of a nuclear winter wasn't enough! Carbon taxes, oil rationing, and unrealistic government imposed regulations will be the end results of the misguided efforts of these anti-capitalist enviros.

The common thread in all these scenarios is that mankind is the evil that threatens the Earth. In the extreme green view, mankind is the scourge of this planet, the bottom rung of the ecological ladder. It's a radical view in which the cause is justified by any means necessary, including Eco-activism tactics such as hacking into and changing electronic road signs to display environmental messages. Some may consider these actions to be harmless pranks, but where should we draw the line? When does eco-activism become eco-terrorism? In June, 2001, Jeffrey Luers was sentenced to 22 years in prison for the burning of three SUVs in Eugene, Oregon, with the help of a friend named "Critter" to make a statement about global warming.

The practice of tree spiking, first used to discourage logging in the 1800's, was advocated by the radical environmentalist group Earth First in an ill-conceived effort to save the spotted owl. To the greens, the life of an animal or a tree is more important that the life of a human. Tree spiking caused serious injury to loggers and became a felony in the United States in 1988. The practice was finally renounced by Earth First leader Judi Bari in 1990.

Earth Liberation Front

The following information appears on the North Carolina Wesleyan College site

Although debatable, ELF, or the Earth Liberation Front, will be considered here as the most active, most dangerous, and largest domestic terrorist group in America (at least the FBI seems to think so). ELF first surfaced in 1996 when they set fire to a U.S. Forest Service truck in Oregon, which caused little damage, but have since escalated into major damage events in populated areas. ELF is a militant offshoot of the group Earth First! and before that, have roots in such 1970s groups as the Environmental Task Force, which went around the country blowing up crop dusters because they were spreading harmful pesticides. They believe in saving the planet from the damage being done to it by pollution, logging, mining, and real estate development. Their strategy is that by destroying property and inflicting financial damage, they can convince people to stop environmentally harmful practices. Like ALF, ELF operates without leadership and structure, and it may even be inappropriate to call ELF a "group." Activists "join" ELF by carrying out "direct action," leaving behind some slogans or initials at the crime scene, and then posting their accomplishment on one of the group's web sites. According to the ELF website, 75 "direct actions" occurred in 2003, of which half were claimed in the name of ELF (or ALF), and rest were either anonymous or in the name of what were called "revolutionary cells" such as the Animal Liberation Brigade, Direct Action Front, the Frogs, or the Vegan Dumpster Militia.

In 2004, the FBI has been actively tracking and arresting suspected "ringleaders" of ELF, such as the 23-year old responsible for a 2003 firebombing of a Hummer dealership. He was caught after sending emails to a major newspaper claiming responsibility for the crimes. Another shadowy 38-year old "ringleader" was caught in 2004 using fake IDs and attempting to shoplift some boltcutters from a Canadian store. The FBI's strategy has been to make high profile arrests and attempt to demonstrate the group's vulnerability. Meanwhile, the property damage keeps adding up.

a 2004 firebombing of newly constructed homes in Seattle, costing $1 million

a 2003 arson of a condominium complex in San Diego, costing $50 million

a 2003 arson of a Hummer dealership and 3 other car dealerships in Los Angeles, costing $2 million each

a 1998 arson at a ski resort in Vail, Colorado, costing $12 million

since 1996, numerous crimes in 14 states, totalling over $100 million in damage nationwide; see map, which is from Maxim Magazine's 2004 article (Denson 2004)

Numerous FBI-led Joint Terrorist Task Forces and anti-terrorist analysts have tried to track down, arrest, prosecute, and convict members of ELF, but they are a difficult group for law enforcement to deal with. Superior encryption tools are used whenever members communicate with one another electronically or via their centralized websites, and ELF's autonomous cell structure defies surveillance and infiltration. The FBI claims ELF has simply had dumb luck that nobody has been killed yet, but ELF maintains that it carries out well-planned acts of economic sabotage. There is no known way to profile ELF members as different from other environmentalists who might live in co-ops on organic farms. NIJ-funded research is underway, however, to develop pre-incident indicators of when such extremists seem to get desperate enough to go on another arson rampage, like they did in 2003, where theories abound from speculation involving upset over the war in Iraq to the influence of other factors, like when the group thinks enough endangered species are at risk, or the cause of getting Americans to change their lifestyles need to be placed in the public eye again. Unfortunately, there are few criminological theories of ecoterrorism developed yet, and it may very well be some time before all the necessary research is completed.

Evangelicals Like It Hot | Still skeptical of climate change. - By Mark D. Tooley - SUPPOSEDLY GLOBAL WARMING IS the wedge issue that will peel evangelicals away from their conservative voting habits and their ostensible preoccupation with sexual mores. So when the president of the conservative-led 16 million member Southern Baptist Convention signed a Global Warming statement, headlines blazed, and the evangelical left cheered. But the church's president has since attempted to clarify. And the head of the denomination's official public policy arm is publicly opposing congressional legislation mandating increased carbon caps. (03/28/08)

Baptist eco-activists are blowing hot air - By Luke Boggs For the Journal-Constitution - Count me among those Southern Baptists who aren't wild about some in the denomination issuing a declaration on climate change earlier this month.
While the activists at the self-styled Southern Baptist Environment and Climate Initiative have every right to their opinions, I believe they are overreaching in trying to transform a political question into one of morality.
In fact, with all due respect, I think these folks have a lot of nerve, telling their fellow Baptists to jump on the global-warming bandwagon and take action in what may well prove to be this century's equivalent of tilting at windmills, only with a host of potentially devastating consequences.
The declaration, which was not endorsed by the denomination itself, boils down to this: "We resolve to engage this issue without any further lingering over the basic reality of the problem or our responsibility to address it." In other words: The debate is over, global warming is here, and we must, as good Baptists, rise up to fight it.
But merely declaring a debate over doesn't make it so. Amen! While plenty of scientists buy into global warming, many others don't. Temperature shifts can reflect any number of factors unrelated to human activity. And a healthy skepticism makes sense... (03/27/08)

Modern religion leaves me cold - By Contrarian - SOMETIMES I think I must be the last person in England who doesn't quite believe in the modern religion of global warming. (03/13/08)

The Church of Global Warming - By Mark D. Tooley - The NCC’s "eco-justice" program, along with the Catholic and Jewish environmental groups, are all partners in the Massachusetts-based National Religious Partnership for the Environment, which funnels dollars from left-leaning foundations to religious groups willing to propagate environmentalist themes, especially Global Warming alarmism, through America’s churches and synagogues. Another partner is the Evangelical Environmental Network, which was strangely unrepresented in the Northern Ireland expedition. (02/21/08)

More global warming religion...literally!
Christians told: Give up carbon for Lent - By Paul Eccleston - Two senior Church of England Bishops have called on people to give up carbon rather than chocolate for Lent.
Carbon Fast: An act with impact
They want to drive home the climate change message to churchgoers by encouraging them to cut their energy use.
The Bishop of Liverpool, the Rt Rev James Jones and the Bishop of London, the Rt Rev Richard Chartres, will make the call before the 40 days of Lent begins on Wednesday February 6.
Lent is the time when Christians traditionally give up such things as sweets, chocolate or alcohol in recognition of the 40 days Christ spent fasting in the desert to prepare for his ministry.
This year they will be asked to think about their own carbon footprint and follow a few simple steps designed to help cut CO2 emissions. They include:
* avoiding plastic bags
* giving the dishwasher a day off
* insulating the hot water tank
* checking the house for drafts with a ribbon and buying draught excluders (02/05/08)

You don't think global warming is religion?
Carbon Fast: An act with impact - By Hazel Southam - Lent starts tomorrow and I've been casting around for something to give up.
Christians told: Give up carbon for Lent
Chocolate seems a bit predictable. Crisps and gin and tonic might be better, but harder to achieve. Yet neither seem to have the gravitas that you'd hope for from an act designed to mirror Christ's 40 days in the wilderness.
Frankly, who'll care if I'm knocking back less gin? It's hardly an act with impact.
So, I was delighted to stumble on the Carbon Fast a 40-day scheme for Lent being launched by the aid and development agency Tearfund. (02/05/08)

From Papal Indulgences to Carbon Credits: Is Global Warming a Sin? - By Alexander Cockburn - In a couple of hundred years, historians will be comparing the frenzies over our supposed human contribution to global warming to the tumults at the latter end of the 10th century as the Christian millennium approached. Then, as now, the doomsters identified human sinfulness as the propulsive factor in the planet's rapid downward slide.
Then as now, a buoyant market throve on fear. The Roman Catholic Church was a bank whose capital was secured by the infinite mercy of Christ, Mary, and the Saints, and so the Pope could sell indulgences, like checks. The sinners established a line of credit against bad behavior and could go on sinning. Today a world market in "carbon credits" is in formation. Those whose "carbon footprint" is small can sell their surplus carbon credits to others, less virtuous than themselves.
The modern trade is as fantastical as the medieval one. There is still zero empirical evidence that anthropogenic production of CO2 is making any measurable contribution to the world's present warming trend. The greenhouse fearmongers rely entirely on unverified, crudely oversimplified computer models to finger mankind's sinful contribution. Devoid of any sustaining scientific basis, carbon trafficking is powered by guilt, credulity, cynicism, and greed, just like the old indulgences, though at least the latter produced beautiful monuments. By the 16th century, long after the world had sailed safely through the end of the first millennium, Pope Leo X financed the reconstruction of St. Peter's Basilica by offering a "plenary" indulgence, guaranteed to release a soul from purgatory...more (09/24/07)

Greening for God's creation sake - Catholic community finds new ways of meeting ecological responsibilities - By Mary Jo Dangel, St. Anthony Messenger ( - CINCINNATI, Ohio (St. Anthony Messenger) - Long before the environmental movement began and global warming became a hot topic, God told us in the first chapter of the Book of Genesis that caring for creation is our moral responsibility. But evidence is mounting that we haven't been doing a very good job, and the results are catching up with us.
Thus, people of faith, including Catholics, are going green because of their religious convictions. Some of them are finding out that saving the earth saves them money, too... I think it's interesting to note that warmists often liken "denialists" to creationists. How ironic that the warmists are prepared to take it on faith that the invisible CO2 Boogeyman in the Sky is warming the Earth, not the all mighty Creator. There's no longer any denying that Global Warming is a religion in itself. (09/24/07)

Let 'em feel heat of their fallacy: Global warming zealots, just chill - Skeptics of the Al Gore School of "We're All Gonna Die" Climate Panic often refer to global warming as a religion. Close, but not quite. It's more like a cult - a suicide cult. It's tempting (pardon the pun) to compare global warming alarmists to religious zealots because, like the devout, the beliefs of global panic kooks are impervious to reason. When NASA's erroneous temperature readings were recently corrected, revealing no measurable change in temperature since 1998, global alarmists were, well, alarmed. (Aren't they always?) And, like the religious, climate-change cultists can make any set of facts fit within their belief system. Iain Murray at the Competitive Enterprise Institute quotes a report from LiveScience in June 2005 that "Since the late 1960s, much of the North Atlantic Ocean has become less salty, in part due to global warming." (09/04/07)

Global Warming Blasphemy - By John Campbell [congressman] - Global warming has become a religion for many back here in Washington. To this crowd, there are no greater or more urgent problems anywhere. They worship at the alter of carbon generation and reduction. To them, the great crime of Al Gore Jr. was that at 100 mph, the electric engine on his Prius was not operating and he was laying down the carbon footprint of at least a 6-cylinder engine. What I am about to say will be blasphemy to the religion of global warming. I do not think we should spend money solely to address this issue. Now, before you excommunicate me from the ranks of human beings, allow me to explain... (09/04/07)

Environmentalism: Religion for the Godless - By Matthew Sheffield - In a time when modern science and scholarship have begun to cast doubts on traditional faith, many on the left, right, and center are increasingly abandoning traditional religion. While most such people on the center-right are content simply not to believe, many on the left continue to cling to the salvationist ethos. In the past, that impulse was satiated with communistic reveries. If religion was the opiate of the masses, socialism was the heroin of the secular leftist. That no longer seems, at least outwardly, to be the case. With a worldwide record of abject failure, socialism lost its claim to the miraculous. Despite this, the left's desire for cosmic justice remained unfilled; it was only a matter of time before something stepped into the teleological breach. (08/24/07)

The Church of Global Warming has you - Story: When it comes to global warming, it's the little things - Far more carbon is put out from power generation then by automobiles. All private vehicles on the roads in 2005 (that excludes the truck that dilivers your soymilk and green tea) were responsible for 12% of the US' CO2 equivalent emissions. If we converted all of our coal powerplants to hydroelectric and Nuclear we would reduce the US's CO2 output by over 25%. But facts don't even matter to the Church of Global Warming folk. They just re-write facts to match: (08/20/07)

Thomas: Logic of global warming jihadists: So much hot air - By Cal Thomas - In every child's life there comes a time when childhood fantasies are shattered and he or she is forced to accept reality - there is no Santa Claus or tooth fairy; parents don't always mean it when they promise to stay married until parted by death. Grown-up scientists, theologians, historians, archaeologists and others who pursue facts and objective truths are rooted in reality and constantly adjusting their conclusions, theories and hypotheses when new information comes to light. Those who ignore facts and cling to outdated information, or outright falsehoods, can quickly embrace fanaticism. So it is with ''global warming,'' the secular religion of our day that even has a good number of adherents among people of faith. Having decided to focus less on the eternal and whether anyone dwells there, global warming fundamentalists are pushing planet worship on us in a manner that would make a jihadist proud. (08/15/07)

Global warming hysteria is new eugenics - By Henry Lamb - Gore's global warming religion is reminiscent of the eugenics phenomenon in the 20th century. The elite of the scientific community, and well-to-do of the social set, embraced eugenics as the enlightened way to the perfect society. Skeptics were ridiculed, denounced and pointed to as the kind of scum that would be eliminated if eugenics became the official policy of government. (08/11/07)

ELF arsonist gets 13 years in prison - By Jeff Barnard, Associated Press Writer | May 23, 2007 - EUGENE, Ore. - Declaring that fires set at a police station, an SUV dealership and a tree farm were acts of terrorism, a federal judge Wednesday sentenced a member of a radical environmental group to 13 years in prison. (05/23/07)

Is Al Gore our new savior? - Global warming has literally become a global religion with Al Gore rising to the status of a new "savior" to help cleanse the world of its CO2 sins. The reality is that Gore is the biggest con artist of the century, enabled by a politically biased and uncritical media promoting this pseudoscience (Gore owns a major carbon offset company). Mandatory school viewings of Gore's documentary have manipulated our youth into fearing that the Earth is going to burn up in a massive ball of fire. (07/19/07)

Global warming hysteria: Rise of the eco-religion - By Alisa Craddock - Global warming hysteria has taken on a new level of intensity in the last year, especially since the election, to the point of belligerence. I recently quipped to a priest friend of mine that Liberals know the "Great Chastisement" is coming, and they're gearing up to repackage the Wrath of God as the effects of "Global Warming". It seems that everything that happens is evidence of a great catastrophe looming in our very near future brought about by destruction of our environment due to this controversial theory. And so they keep up the incessant drum beat day and night. As if on cue, all the corporations are focusing on "protecting the environment" in their television advertisements. The schools and universities are having increasing numbers of special events, eco-camps, presentations, and activities dedicated to environmentalism and are trying to get the youth on board with the agenda. Also children's movies, such as "Happy Feet" have a political agenda--nature programs, news stories, Al Gore, even the Supreme Court--everybody's focusing on the environment, and the impending man-made doom that awaits us all. They've been gearing up for it for years, but it has recently been endowed with a new level of urgency, a new ferocity, to the point that scientists who don't get on board with the propaganda are faced with being discredited, even though increasing numbers of them are coming out against the exaggerated assertions of the global warming alarmists. (06/18/07)

Global warming - a new religion? It's okay, the polar bears are thriving - David Carte - Global warming might yet be revealed as the biggest and most expensive myth since the dreaded Y2K bug. Remember the horror stories at the end of 1999 - planes would fall out of the sky and Eskom would seize all because computers would be confused by the date 2000 in their internal clocks. Factories would stop working. Shop shelves would be emptied. Paranoid people actually stocked up on baked beans and candles in case. Even the respectable media was saturated with a looming catastrophe that turned out to be a big hoax. That time the world's hardware and software makers and their consultants made billions of dollars. (05/16/07)

Gore As Religious Figure - By Warner Todd Huston - I can understand the appeal of the global Warming religion, I really can. For those who have disavowed conventional religion and have decided that man is the ultimate power - by which they mean themselves in particular, not just humanity in general - the thought that they alone can save the planet is heady stuff, indeed. (05/09/07)
Battlefield Earth

Hypocrisies and Foolishness in the "Religion of Green" - By Rabbi Aryeh Spero - Everyday we are assaulted with another proclamation from global-warming scare-mongers and the high priests of trendy environmentalism about what we all must do or cannot do in our daily lives if we are to "save the planet." (05/02/07)

A final word on global warming - The global-warming movement is taking on all of the features of a Christian crusade - complete with its self-appointed pope, Al Gore. Alas, I remain a Doubting Thomas. In fact, I have challenged, if not defied, the gospel of global warming in such open and notorious fashion that, if Gore's judgment day were tomorrow, I would go straight to hell. (04/17/07)

From the Pew to the Pulpit: Inside the Church of Global Warming - By Paul A. Ibbetson - Walk carefully, I say unto you, for thou art on holy ground. This was the rude awakening that I received when I entered the global warming debate. It would also be the warning that I would forward to anyone wishing to enter the debate over the validity of man made global warming. I stepped into this discussion after watching the similarities between the scare tactics of the global warmers and what I had seen of the scientific community's certainty of global cooling back in the 1970s. (04/13/07)

Global warming hits poor countries the's the policies stupid - By Nancy Reyes - There is an old joke that X newspaper headline says: End of the world tomorrow, will hit women and minorities the most. Scientists say there is global warming. Fine. I used to live in Minnesota, which was under 200 feet of ice 10,000 years ago. Obviously things are warmer. And scientists say pollution is bad. Fine. I have asthma. I remember the 1950's before the pollution controls on cars, when NYCity air was a thick as Manila during the rush hour. But what I do have a problem with is the "religion" of global warming, the insists that American need to go back to living like the 1950's to stop global warming, or to emulate those eco friendly people in the "third world". (04/13/07)

The Global Warming Jihad - By Butler Shaffer - It is a common mistake for people to assume that religious faith and fervor are qualities to be found only within institutionally-structured churches with formal doctrines and rituals. They are to be found, in varying degrees, within all belief systems, be they secular or theistic in nature. The polar opposite philosophies of Marxism and Ayn Rand's Objectivism - both of which openly condemned traditional religion - are, themselves, grounded in a faith in various central propositions. True-believers of these doctrines who voiced doubt as to any of the underlying premises, have been subjected to purges as enthusiastically conducted as medieval trials for heresy. (04/12/07)

Gore Has Turned Global Warming into a Religion - By Kevin Roeten - One of the definitions of religion is defined by Webster as "anything done or followed with reverence and devotion." But as Jonah Goldberg(TownHall) exclaimed "Gore is on the side of the angels and therefore it's mean-spirited to throw inconvenient truths back at the Oscar winner for An Inconvenient Truth". But what has Gore to gain from all his hype? Back on 1/2/07 Roger Hedgecock(KOGO radio) revealed what most scientists(not bureaucrats) agreed on--the top 9 reasons for global warming. Man was #9, volcanic eruptions #7, plankton #5, and the Sun was #1. (04/05/07)

The green fervour - Is environmentalism the new religion? - By Joseph Brean, National Post - In his new book Apollo's Arrow, ambitiously subtitled The Science of Prediction and the Future of Everything, Vancouver-based author and mathematician David Orrell set out to explain why the mathematical models scientists use to predict the weather, the climate and the economy are not getting any better, just more refined in their uncertainty. (04/04/07)

Global Warming: the founding of a new religion - I am an advocate and agree with Rush Limbaugh and other conservative thinkers, that global warming is caused in great part by the sun and solar flares. I do not believe that mankind is the sole or primary cause of planet warming. The Industrial Age, including the invention of the combustion engine and the deforestation of the rainforests certainly haven't helped the situation. But to blame modern civilization and its incredible advances in technology, science and medicine is tantamount to squeezing us into Professor Peabody's "Way Back Machine" and landing us back in the 17th century! (03/28/07)

Gore's Global Warming Religion - By Ann Coulter - No matter how much liberals try to dress up their nutty superstitions about global warming as "science," which only six-fingered lunatics could doubt, scratch a global warming "scientist" and you get a religious fanatic. (03/21/07)

Environmentalism as Religion - by John M. Ostrowski - Like many religions, there is a strong emphasis in environmentalism on the end of the world. Fear mongering and predictions of the apocalypse are the primary evangelizing tools of environmentalists. In the past we've endured warnings about overpopulation, nuclear holocausts, and now a global climate disaster. And like the apocalyptic predictions of other religions, those of environmentalism have never come to pass. (03/21/07)

The New Religion is Global Warming - By Tom DeWeese - Global warming has become a new religion. No one is supposed to question whether it is a fact. I did and for my trouble I was labeled a "moron," a "liar;" one who wants to "blow up the world," and just plain "evil" to name a few from a mass of mail I received. (02/16/07)

WARMING WORLD HAS INCREASED POLAR BEAR NUMBERS - Since the 1970s, while the world was warming, polar bear numbers increased dramatically from around 5,000 to as many as 25,000 today. (01/22/07)

Why the green lobby must be treated as a religion - Anthropologists have established how different cultures independently evolve similar myths - familiar stories, such as the myth of the Fall and the myth of the Apocalypse, which meet deep-seated human needs. The Christian tradition describes the temptation of Adam and Eve and warns of the Last Judgment. (01/09/07)

Polar Bears on Thin Ice, Not Really! Brief Analysis - By H. Sterling Burnett - Recently, some scientists have claimed that human-caused global warming poses a significant threat to the survival of many species. For most species at risk, they argue, warming will cause the range of suitable habitat to shift faster than either the species (or their food sources) can move or adapt to a new range. For other species, they say, suitable habitat will cease to exist altogether. Among the species claimed to be at high risk of extinction from human-caused global warming is the charismatic polar bear. Indeed, in February 2005 the Center for Biological Diversity filed a petition with the United States Fish and Wildlife Service to list the polar bear as endangered or threatened. The petition was later joined by the Natural Resources Defense Council and Greenpeace. In response, the USFWS initiated a formal status review to determine if the polar bear should be protected throughout its range. (05/17/06)

Polar bears defy extinction threat - By CHRIS MCAULEY - THE world's polar bear population is on the increase despite global warming, which scientists had believed was pushing the animal towards extinction. According to new research, the numbers of the giant predator have grown by between 15 and 25 per cent over the last decade. Some authorities on Arctic wildlife even claim that hunting, and not global warming, has been the real cause of the decrease in polar bear numbers in areas where the species is in decline. (02/07/05)

Meteorologist Likens Fear of Global Warming to 'Religious Belief' - Once a person becomes a believer of global warming, "you never have to defend this belief except to claim that you are supported by all scientists -- except for a handful of corrupted heretics," (12/02/04)

"Aliens Cause Global Warming" - A lecture by Michael Crichton - My topic today sounds humorous but unfortunately I am serious. I am going to argue that extraterrestrials lie behind global warming. Or to speak more precisely, I will argue that a belief in extraterrestrials has paved the way, in a progression of steps, to a belief in global warming. Charting this progression of belief will be my task today. (01/17/03)
